TOWARDS MULTIPLE PHILOSOPHIES OF MUSIC JOURNALISM
The New Lexicon seeks neither to codify a single authoritative philosophy of music culture nor to determine its form in advance. Such a field must remain responsive to practices differing in history, place, medium, community, method, and social position. Its concepts must be precise without claiming universality, open to revision without losing critical force, and able to address both singular musical experiences and the structures that make them possible.
The programme therefore aims to establish conditions from which multiple philosophies of music culture may emerge: philosophies grounded in situated practice, sharpened through critique, tested through dialogue, and revised through encounter. Such philosophies may disagree about the meaning of culture, the location of agency, the authority of tradition, the status of identity, the criteria of value, or the responsibilities of musical participation. Their value will not lie in convergence, but in their capacity to clarify what is at stake and renew the languages through which musical life understands itself.
To develop a new lexicon is to make new distinctions possible while becoming more accountable for those already in use. It is to ask what our concepts allow us to hear, whom they permit us to recognize, which relations they conceal, and how artistic and musicological practice might transform the terms of cultural intelligibility. The residency begins from this task and invites musicologists and artists to undertake it collectively.
